Two days ago, I hit with a thought while driving: what is the current GPS is enhanced with some sort of 'predictive' mechanism. The scenario goes like this: - During turn-by-turn navigation, the GPS unit is linked with various sensor and status of the vehicle
- If the vehicle is making a turn sign (either left or right) and yet it is not yet the 'acceptable' distance, then the GPS unit will start recalculating the alternative route for the (about-to-be) new route.
That's the starting predictive mechanism.
The enhancement of that is to be linked with the speed sensor. Here are the reasons: - when the signal is turned on (either left or right) and the speed is not slowing down to make the turn, then the GPS will recalculate the route based on the upcoming 'straight' direction (the direction where the car is not making the turn)
- when the signal is turned on (either left or right) and the speed is slowing down and it is still further from the point to make the turn, then the GPS unit will recalculate the alternative route based on the upcoming turn direction (this will be sensed whether the next direction will be left or right).
I will write a separate article on the other GPS and vehicle improvement that could be implemented in the future (or maybe already under research?)
